On Sunday morning 17 March 2013, the body of young man was found under water drain running through Vĩnh Yên town, Vĩnh Phúc province. The victim was identified Nguyễn Tuấn Anh, born 1986, a resident at Phố Cả, Hội Hợp Ward, Vĩnh Yên town. The report of forensic doctors confirmed Nguyễn Anh Tuấn was drunk, fell into the culvert and drowned. But the relatives of victim saw his chest and head remained many purple bruises, and his set of teeth were completely lost.
According to unverified statement from multiple sources of local people, the son-in-law of the Chairman of Vĩnh Phúc province beat Nguyễn Tuấn Anh to death, then threw his body into the drain. Nguyễn Tuấn Anh’s relatives and thousands of Vĩnh Yên residents have staged protest against local government, for they deepened suspicions that authorities were turning a blind eye to the bloodshed, or even offered their umbrella to the suspector. Nguyễn Tuấn Anh’s tragic death highlighted how important it was for society not to convict people who must be responsible for crime, but nothing was done to pursue allegations he/she was directly involved in Mr. Tuấn Anh’s killing. Where was the media? Where was the truth in our Vietnamese society? Ask if the local authorities have to be condemned and demonized in Mr. Tuấn Anh’s fatal case. Such their assumptive decision, if be considered true, would be absolutely fatal to our society.
The family of Mr. Nguyễn Tuấn Anh and his local residents have accused the government of not doing enough to protect citizens, and they questioned how those brutal attacks could happen with such regularity? They demonstrated together, expressed their outrage over local authorities’ decision to reverse a guilty not to verdict of Mr. Nguyễn Tuấn Anh’s extraordinary death. They carried Mr. Nguyễn Tuấn Anh’s coffin on the streets, embroiled in wave of protest for asking Justice.
